Matzen Park—a green oasis made for walking
Schloss Matzen is surrounded by magnificent parkland that is open to the public throughout the year. Created in the late 19th century on behalf of Franz Freiherr von Lipperheide and modelled on an English landscape garden, it embraces the castle on every side.
Together with Schloss Matzen, Schloss Lipperheide, Schloss Lichtenwerth and the ruins of Kropfsberg, this landscape is among Tyrol’s most beautiful and valuable cultural settings. Two artificial ponds—the Lion Pond and Carp Pond—and more than 40 exotic species of trees and shrubs characterise the park. Beside the Carp Pond stands the Nymphaeum, a fountain dedicated to water nymphs in the tradition of classical Greece and Rome.
Numerous trails lead through Matzen Park and the surrounding countryside, from family walks and a circuit of nearby castles to paths climbing towards Reith im Alpbachtal.
